The articles represent a significant contribution to advancing standardization in how precision medicine is managed across the market access landscape.
AMCP and OHMA have closely partnered in leading the Precision Medicine Initiative in the hopes of closing gaps in the Precision Medicine journey that lead to patient drop-off. With the publication of these articles, AMCP and OHMA are leading the charge in actualizing solutions from the collaborative discussions and thinking generated by the collective members of the Precision Medicine Initiative. "Natural Language Processing to Develop a Standardized Lexicon for Precision Medicine in Oncology"
This article presents results from a natural language processing initiative that proposes standardized definitions for 19 commonly used terms in precision medicine in oncology. By establishing a consolidated lexicon, this work provides foundational precision medicine context for broader managed care stakeholders, clarifies the distinction between related concepts, and has the potential to support clearer communication and streamlined policy decision-making.
"Payer Coverage Principles for Precision Medicine Biomarker Testing in Oncology"
Building on standardized terminology, this article recommends best guiding principles for the coverage of biomarker testing in oncology. By aligning benefit design with the proposed coverage principles, payers and health plans can support appropriate, efficient, and equitable access to oncology biomarker testing—ultimately benefiting patients, providers, and the broader healthcare ecosystem.
"Key Considerations When Assessing Clinical Utility for Biomarker Testing: A Checklist"
The third article directly addresses a critical challenge in managed care: the inconsistency in evaluating clinical utility of biomarker tests across organizations. Recognizing that evaluation methodologies vary both within and across individual payer and laboratory benefit manager (LBM) organizations, this publication provides a standardized checklist that payers and LBMs can implement when assessing biomarker test clinical utility. This tool is designed to promote greater consistency in coverage and benefit design decisions across organizations, ultimately reducing complexity and confusion for patients, providers, and manufacturers navigating the coverage landscape.
