AMCP is working to solve the metabolic health crisis by advancing guidance, education, and collaboration to support aligned coverage, equitable access, and improved outcomes.
The metabolic health crisis is multidimensional—encompassing type 2 diabetes, obesity, MASH/MASLD, cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, and related conditions—all driven by shared underlying dysfunction (insulin resistance, inflammation, mitochondrial impairment).
Despite strong downstream work on GLP‑1s, MASH/MASLD, and access, managed care lacks a coordinated, upstream framework that integrates the multiple dimensions of the metabolic health crisis and identifies & operationalizes treatment & prevention tools (e.g., CGM, lifestyle interventions) across benefit design and population health.
More than 88% of U.S. adults are metabolically unhealthy, driving a disproportionate burden of chronic disease and a $1.5T+ annual economic impact that is projected to rise without systemic prevention.
Breakthrough innovations—including GLP-1–based therapies, continuous glucose monitoring (CGM), and evidence-based lifestyle interventions—are rapidly reshaping care.
AMCP has launched a multi-year initiative to empower payers to shift from siloed treatment to holistic, root-cause-focused metabolic health management—redefining roles in benefit design and population outcomes—starting immediately with the new ADA 2026 CGM expansions that are reshaping coverage and access.
AMCP will be having a high-profile 45-minute Spotlight Theater on metabolic health at the AMCP 2026 Annual Meeting on April 13-16, 2026 in Nashville, TN. This is a unique opportunity to be part of the first phase of this initiative and drive payer engagement with the new ADA guidelines.
Presented by AMCP with a distinguished payer panel, spotlights explore how plans are adapting benefit design and coverage policies in response to evolving ADA recommendations. An interactive Q&A with payers will discuss real-world implementation challenges and practical solutions.
