Meet AMCP Diplomat Michelle Chang, MBA, PharmD

Michelle Chang, MBA, PharmD

How did you become involved in AMCP?
While in pharmacy school, I was not as active in AMCP. In hindsight, I wish I spent more time within AMCP while in pharmacy school. However, during my residency, I became an active AMCP member and post residency until now, I have expanded my involvement within AMCP. I have prior experience serving on one of the national committees, becoming a Conference buddy, being a Diplomat for University of Maryland Baltimore School of Pharmacy and University of Maryland Eastern Shore, and being an active member serving on the Programming Committee for the new MidAtlantic Affiliate.

What interested you the most about managed care and ultimately led you to pursue a career in managed care pharmacy?
I first got exposure to managed care pharmacy in my undergraduate years working at a retail location for a specialty pharmacy - it was there that I learned what utilization management was and that it entailed prior authorizations, quantity limits and step therapy. I was able to help bridge the gap between the health plans, providers and patients while ensuring that the patients didn't have access to care if the medication was clinically appropriate. Being able to witness the vast complexity of managed care, the flow of dollars, and the larger picture of member access and affordability, peaked my interest further to ensure that I pursued managed care post Pharmacy School studies.

What was your first job or position in managed care?
My first experience within managed care was as a PGY1 Managed Care resident with CVS Health, which allowed me the opportunity to explore many facets of not only managed care, but also the various functions within a Pharmacy Benefit Manager (PBM). Post residency, my first job was also within CVS Health where I worked within Clinical Operations supporting both health plan and employer clients.

What does a typical day or week look like in your current role?
In my current role as AVP, Health Plan Sales & Clinical, I lead a hybrid team of Clinical Advisors who are pharmacists, Strategic Account Executives, and hybrid Strategic Clinical Account Executives. A typical day or week involves a dynamic blend of responsibilities and interactions. My team and I engage with health plan clients, ensuring their needs are met through strategic partnership that drives to their goals, while driving cost savings and clinical initiatives. My tasks range from managing a P&L, contract negotiations, strategic planning to hands-on problem-solving, all aimed at optimizing managed care pharmacy services. Additionally, I participate in various events and discussions within CVS Health and externally, at AMCP student chapters and schools of pharmacy, sharing insights and mentoring aspiring professionals. These engagements keep me connected with the latest industry trends and allow me to contribute to the growth and development of future pharmacists.

What type of interactions have you had with your AMCP student chapter or school of pharmacy?
My interactions with the AMCP student chapter and the school of pharmacy have been multifaceted and enriching. I've had the privilege of participating in various events, including guest lectures and panel discussions, where I shared insights from my managed care pharmacy journey. Additionally, I have mentored students, providing guidance on career paths and helping them navigate the complexities of the field. These engagements have not only allowed me to give back to the community but have also kept me connected with the latest trends and innovations in pharmacy education.
