With more than two million Americans addicted to opioids, health care professionals and the public should be paying attention as never before. We invite you to hear Dr. Steve Bentsen and pharmacist Virginia Kula discuss Beacon Health Option’s white paper, “Confronting the Crisis of Opioid Addiction,” which proposes a chronic disease framework for confronting the crisis of opioid addiction. The speakers will also highlight current programs supporting the chronic disease framework advocated in the white paper. Beacon’s white paper is available at http://beaconlens.com/white-papers. In addition, Salina Wong, Director of Clinical Pharmacy Programs at Blue Shield of California (BSC) will introduce BSC’s Narcotic Safety Initiative, a three-year effort to reduce opioid use among Blue Shield members. The presentation will discuss some of the strategies that BSC is planning and implementing, including partnerships with providers and organizations to manage pain safely and effectively. Also discussed will be health plan challenges related to opioid overuse.
