Description of the Activities in which the Student Pharmacist will be Involved
Managed care is the process of providing quality healthcare and management of population health at an affordable cost. Within the learning experience the student is exposed to the art of designing innovative benefit designs and contemporary disease state/medication therapy management programs, as well as provision of education and empowerment tools to help consumers better understand and manage their health benefits. This APPE experience is recommended for pharmacy students who would like to gain a unique perspective of pharmacist experiences and contributions in managed care pharmacy. This program offers integration with a Pharmacy Benefit Manager (PBM) and a health plan. The rotation experience offers the student an understanding of the pharmacist’s role in managed care and provides the fundamentals of managed care pharmacy. Opportunities to support student learning include formulary management, pipeline and trend, Pharmacy and Therapeutics (P&T), as well as, patient safety programs. The student will be involved with Topic Discussions, Journal Club, drug information and a visit to the Mail and Specialty Pharmacy. There may be additional opportunities which will allow the student to apply the concept and learning while enhancing skills and broadening overall student learning and managed care practice experience.
