A Call to Action: The Public Needs to Know What Managed Care Pharmacy
Does to Improve Patient Care and Make Health Care Services More Affordable

Every day, health care practitioners in managed care pharmacy work to improve the health and well-being of some 200 million Americans living in every corner of the country.

Managed care pharmacy professionals — including pharmacists, physicians and nurses — monitor the safety and effectiveness of new drugs on the market; they alert patients to potentially dangerous drug interactions; they use medication therapy management practices to ensure patients receive the most appropriate therapies; they develop and implement programs to improve medication adherence; they make sure “medical-necessity” guidelines for the pharmacy benefits are consistent with evidence-based medicine and that exceptions are based on sound medical judgment; they provide ongoing patient education and care coordination of medication therapy; and they use tools and incentives to keep the costs of prescription drugs under control.

All of these practices, and more, aim to ensure that all patients have access to the pharmaceuticals they need and that the medications are improving their lives. Unfortunately, this message doesn’t always break through today’s debate over the future of health care. AMCP knows that our members have many stories that illustrate the positive impact of managed care pharmacy on both communities and individuals. This web page aims to tell those stories.
