Special Features: Residents are trained to function as leaders in implementing pharmaceutical care plans for specific patients in a managed care setting. In addition, the residents are trained in the role of the pharmacist in the development and implementation of clinical practice guidelines. The residency program provides clinical, population-based management and administrative training. Clinical experiences include ambulatory rotations in Internal Medicine, Oncology, Family Practice, Asthma, Diabetes, HIV/AIDS, anticoagulation, and Home Parenteral Therapy and inpatient rotations in General Medicine and General Surgery which will emphasize the pharmaceutical care of these patients. Population-based management would include work with the Clinical Roadmap Teams (e.g. asthma, depression, heart care, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, etc.). Administrative training is designed to orient the resident to basic management processes and procedures used to administer a pharmacy department.

The resident will formulate and answer a research question, using scientific principles, with a strong emphasis on outcomes, pharmacoeconomic and quality of life research. Experiences will include a rotation with our HMO (Health Alliance Plan), and involvement with the Center for Clinical Effectiveness, Health System Studies, Quality Improvement Center and Geriatrics Interdisciplinary Team Teaching program. Direct patient care responsibilities in one of our ambulatory clinics will be ongoing throughout the year.
