Message from AMCP’s President
The Academy looks forward to welcoming members to San Antonio, Texas, home of the world famous Alamo and one of the country’s finest urban gems: the San Antonio River Walk. From October 7 to 9, this great Texas town also will become the epicenter of the managed care pharmacy profession.
AMCP’s 2009 Educational Conference continues the tradition of bringing together seasoned veterans, new recruits and everyone else in between to explore emerging trends and share ideas that increase knowledge in our ever-evolving field. This year, more than ever, our profession faces a period of remarkable change. Washington, D.C., is engaged in historic health care reforms that could significantly alter the delivery of health care. Additionally, payers nationwide are evaluating evidence and implementing tools and strategies that aim to compare and identify various interventions that provide the greatest quality at the best price.
Managed care pharmacy is in the thick of these efforts and in many ways can provide a model for successfully bringing about needed changes in the overall health care system. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the practice of evidence-based medicine (EBM), which involves taking a critical look at the available scientific literature to identify and encourage the use of appropriate therapies. EBM is the topic of a special workshop on October 7.
Our conference is chock-full of other valuable educational sessions designed to enhance your knowledge of the practice of managed care pharmacy and its place in the larger health care picture. Attendees can examine what’s coming down the pharmaceutical pipeline, discover the inner workings of pharmacy and therapeutic committees, learn how to influence member behavior through optimal plan design and find out what a patient-centered medical home means for managed care pharmacy, to name just a few.
So join us deep in the heart of the Lone Star State this fall as we explore these and many more exciting topics that will help position you to influence the future and make it even better for our profession and the patients we serve.
Shawn Burke
AMCP President, 2009-2010
