Pharmaceutical Payment Methods
Pharmaceutical Payment Methods

Over the past few years, Congress, federal agencies and many state governments have undertaken efforts to reform the methods used to pay for prescription medications in governmental programs. The implementation of new payment methods are certain to have far-reaching consequences in influencing public and private sector pharmacy benefit programs and the various stakeholders operating within the pharmaceutical marketplace.

The Academy’s Board recognized a need to strengthen the organization’s expertise regarding pharmaceutical payment methods in order to more effectively assess proposed modifications to current payment systems.

AMCP has developed two informational resources for Academy members to achieve these aims:

  • Interactive Resource Library - a user-friendly web-accessible database of important reference documents relevant to prescription drug product payment methods and the pharmaceutical marketplace. The library includes comments regarding the focus, influence, potential impact, and status of each resource/reference item.
  • The AMCP Guide to Pharmaceutical Payment Methods - a comprehensive, factual description and analysis of alternative drug payment methods and payment systems including a review of the history, current application, potential future utility, impact on managed care pharmacy, other stakeholders in the pharmaceutical marketplace and the overall health care delivery system. It includes a Glossary of payment terms, tables showing which payers and settings utilize which methods, payment flowcharts to illustrate how the money flows with each of the payment systems and examples of payment calculations.
