This is not a clinical internship. It is designed to givethe intern exposure to the industry outside of the pharmacy. When the student finishes they will have actively participated in data base research and development, business development which may include sales and marketing as well as other day to day aspects of running a not for profit standards development organization (SDO) that is responsible for the standards specific to the pharmacy services sector of healthcare. 

Position is only open to students in US schools of pharmacy who have completed their third year of a four year program, or have completed their fifth year of a six year program

Goal of the summer internship is to enhance the student's awareness of career opportunities in managed care pharmacy practice and to obtain an understanding of the concepts of managed care principles.

2010 AMCP/FMCP/Allergan Specialized Summer Internship Program in Health Outcomes
The goal of this program is to stimulate student pharmacists’ interest in career options in health outcomes and pharmacoeconomics through exposure to health outcomes research and measurement and its application to evidence-based decision making. In addition, the two student pharmacists selected will gain knowledge of the pharmaceutical industry, managed healthcare systems and professional association management.

Clinical product managers serve as primary contact for all clinical product development and maintenance. The Analytics and Outcomes Internship program is designed to provide pharmacy students a unique perspective to the managed care arena. This program offers the intern exposure to compiling and creating customized pharmaceutical cost analyses. These analyses explain how environmental factors, plan design, and Caremark pharmaceutical programs affect pharmacy costs. The intern will also be involved in proactively examining client data to identify cost saving and quality improvement opportunities. The intern will learn and be able to perform the following: 1) employ research results and existing analytical tools to help clients understand factors affecting their pharmacy costs, 2) proactively analyze client data to identify opportunities to sell additional pharmacy management services, 3) participate in cross-functional product development, marketing and other initiatives reliant on customer intelligence, and 4) coordinate closely with sales team.

This internship is only available to students enrolled in the University of Iowa or Drake University Colleges of Pharmacy.

Program includes exposure to Medicare Part D prescription drug program, Medicaid managed care, clinical program development, drug information, etc.

• Proactively analyze participant medication and medical claim profiles to maximize therapies and  provide optimal health care
• Consult with physicians, case managers, and participants regarding drug utilization and standards of care
• Educate participants regarding medication therapy via telephone, Caremark's web site, or mail
• Analyze and make sound clinical recommendations
• Assist department in maintaining smooth workflow

Group Health Cooperative's (GHC) Pharmacy Intern Program is intented to provide interns with a meaningful learning experience.  The intern work experience at GHC is meant to supplement the intern's academic training and practical experience.

The goals of the Summer Internship Program are:

• Provide practical work experience in a patient-centered care environment
• Facilitate recruitment of pharmacists by enhancing ties with the colleges of pharmacy
• Expose GHC pharmacists to emerging concepts in pharmacy practice discussed in the academic setting.
• Provide mentoring opportunities for staff pharmacists, which will facilitate:
  • Developing Pharmacist teaching & preceptor skills (requires current clinical competency)
  • Creating a challenging and stimulating work environment for staff

GHC expectats interns to maintain professional conduct during the internship, which includes:  

• Demonstrating a high degree of dependability, cooperation, and initiatve
• Being punctual and maintaining a good attendance record
• Demonstrating a willingness to lear and work
• Providing superior patient care

2010 AMCP/FMCP/Pfizer Student Pharmacist Managed Care Summer Internship Program
Through participation in a structured ten week internship program, selected student pharmacists are afforded the opportunity to directly participate in the daily activities of managed care pharmacy practice sites to include health plans, pharmacy benefit management companies and Veterans Affairs Medical Centers (VAMC). The twelve student pharmacists chosen for this program are also exposed to the working environment of a professional membership society and the pharmaceutical industry.
