An overview of health information technology landscape
The Academy has released a document that provides an overview of today’s health information technology landscape. The AMCP HIT Primer , which is funded through a sponsorship from Boehringer Ingelheim, is now available online and will be mailed in the June issue of the AMCP News.
Health information technology, or HIT, already is being used in many health care settings, including managed care pharmacy. Its use is expected to grow exponentially in the coming years. The HIT Primer is intended to provide an HIT overview with a particular emphasis on the drivers, trends and elements of health IT impacting providers and managed care pharmacy.
The Primer starts with a review of pivotal HIT events, and follows with an overview of the emerging “ecosystem,” including definitions of key terms such as electronic health records (EHRs) and e-prescribing. The paper concludes with a summary of the major aspects of HIT that readers should watch closely as HIT evolves, including the implications of an environment where most prescribing involves EHRs at the point of care.
