Program Description

Preparing for Innovation in the Treatment of Sickle Cell Disease

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is an autosomal recessive genetic disease that affects approximately 100,000 people within the United States. Current treatment options for SCD attempt to implement a holistic approach that both manages physical manifestations and addresses the mental, emotional, and social well-being of patients. Several pipeline treatments, including gene therapies, are being developed with the intent to better manage and potentially cure sickle cell disease.

This program will provide an overview of SCD and its treatment, review managed care approaches for sickle cell disease, and explore treatments in development, including potential cures through gene therapy.

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe the pathophysiology, physical manifestations, clinical course, and impact on patient quality of life of sickle cell disease (SCD).
  2. List currently-available treatment options for patients with SCD.
  3. Discuss approaches currently utilized by third party payers to manage costs associated with the care of patients with SCD.
  4. Review sickle cell treatment options in the pipeline, including gene therapies, and their potential role in the management of patients with SCD.

Target Audience

This knowledge-based activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of pharmacists, physicians, and nurses in managed care settings.
