Program Description

Managing Multiple Sclerosis to Improve Patient and Payer Outcomes

Multiple sclerosis (MS) affects approximately 400,000 individuals in the United States and 2.5 million people worldwide. It is a progressive and debilitating disease that is characterized by periods of remission and relapse. Available medications can extend periods between disease flares but cannot reverse the disease process. Treatment of MS must be individualized, but often involves the use of specialty medications that are associated with considerable costs. Common sequelae associated with MS also contribute substantially to the disease burden and costs of caring for affected patients. Adherence to medications is suboptimal due to issues including perceived lack of efficacy and adverse events. Programs designed to support adherence can help patients develop realistic expectations, manage adverse events, improve patient quality of life, and reduce overall costs. In this webinar, experts will discuss current and emerging treatment options for MS, and explore how value-based reimbursement models are increasingly being used by managed care organizations to tailor treatment interventions to individual patients and improve patient satisfaction with therapy.

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Summarize current pharmacologic management strategies for multiple sclerosis (MS).
  2. Identify MS medications in the pipeline and discuss how they may impact the management of MS.
  3. Discuss current and future payer management strategies and methods for optimizing adherence and medication management for patients with MS.
  4. Describe options for health plans to implement value-based reimbursement models to manage costs associated with MS.
