Special Features: 
General: Both programs allow residents to gain an industry and pharmacy benefits management perspective of managed care through routine business meetings and collaborative projects. As an integral part of the health care management team, residents will take part in aspects of managed care that represent current and future areas of growth.
No weekend or staffing requirements. Teaching and precepting are mandatory. Other required activities include teaching at Rutgers pharmacy school and providing leadership role to AMCP student chapter. The residents will be involved in research projects and will be required to present the research at the national meeting.
Commercial: Residents will be trained to be an integral part of the formulary management, P&T process, evaluation of drug literature and utilization review, medical and pharmacy policies development, support disease state management programs, medication therapy management for Medicare part D members, benefit design, new technologies and specialty pharmacy. They will play an active role in the pharmacy department at Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey. Residents will also get a good industry and PBM perspective of managed care through routine business meetings and collaborative projects. They will be involved in integrated health systems, health literacy projects, and case management programs with multidisciplinary team at Horizon.
Medicare: Residents can expect to play an integral role within the medication therapy management program for Medicare Part D members. Additional exposure within Medicare includes regulatory compliance, clinical management, quality star measures and program development. Residents will participate and develop strategies to manage high-cost drivers in the Medicare population working in conjunction with actuaries, analysts, physicians and nurses. They will develop an understanding of Medicare Part D plan operations and process development to meet the changing regulatory environment. Although Medicare Part D plan operations will be a primary focus of the residency, other areas of involvement will include specialty pharmacy, medical pharmacy, health literacy and legislative impacts on pharmacy.
