In addition to valuable interactions with other pharmacy residents at the HCA corporate office, rotational learning experiences include health policy, pharmaceutical strategic sourcing and pricing, comparative effectiveness research, population health management & data analytics, and clinical decision making and leadership. Clinical skills are maintained through a clinical practice site learning experience at a local HCA hospital.

Examples of residency projects include population health management for outpatient physician services, medication-specific data analytics, policy and guideline review and revision, state Medicaid formulary medication use evaluations, and drug procurement and utilization processes. The resident will incorporate evidence-based practices into all projects assigned.

The HCA corporate managed care pharmacy residents are an important part of the onsite resident team consisting of six other onsite residents. Each resident performs the vital role as preceptor for students rotating through the corporate office practice site. The residency program is strengthened through affiliation with the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy, where residents have the option to pursue a teaching and learning program (TLP) certificate. HCA has strong ties to the three local schools of pharmacy and involvement with several others nationwide.

This program will prepare the resident for positions including, but not limited to, post-graduate year 2 training, managed care organization/health plan, pharmaceutical industry, regulatory compliance or quality assurance and improvement at a hospital or system level.
