AMCP Opens 27th Annual Meeting & Expo in San Diego, Calif.

San Diego, Calif., April 8, 2015 — Nearly 4,000 managed care pharmacists and other health care professionals from across the country are gathering in San Diego, Calif., to attend the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy’s (AMCP’s) 27th Annual Meeting & Expo. The meeting runs through Friday, April 10.

The meeting is the premiere event for professionals dedicated to the development and delivery of pharmacy benefits to more than 200 million Americans.

“This year’s attendance figures along with the record number of educational offerings, exhibitors, poster presenters and product theaters are a testament to managed care pharmacy’s growing importance in today’s health care system,” said AMCP Chief Executive Officer Edith A. Rosato, RPh, IOM. “The success of this event also reflects AMCP’s ability to gather top experts from many disciplines who are helping to shape pharmacy care in the new era of health care reform.”

Meeting attendees include managed care pharmacists, physicians and nurses, formulary decision-makers, health plan administrators and medical directors, and Medicare Part D and Medicaid administrators. Together, they will attend more than 40 education programs in six topic tracks:

  • Business Trends in Managed Care: The latest business trends affecting the practice of managed care and managed care pharmacy.
  • Staying on Course With Legislative and Regulatory Issues: Updates on federal and state laws and regulations that are changing the way managed care pharmacy operates.
  • Global Perspectives in Formulary Management: The latest innovations in formulary decision-making strategies presented by U.S. and international experts.
  • The Landscape of Contemporary Managed Care Pharmacy: An examination of controversies, new ideas and niche issues affecting various managed care topics.
  • Spotlight on Medication Therapy Management (MTM): An in-depth look at successful strategies and best practices of MTM in pharmacy care.
  • Research and its Practical Application: Strategies for interpreting and applying the latest managed care research in the practice setting.

Kicking off the Annual Meeting & Expo was AMCP’s second annual Specialty Pharmacy Conference, which brought together nearly 600 leading experts to discuss the latest in utilization and management of these high-cost therapies. In addition, the meeting included 12 independent satellite symposia covering wide range of topics, including managing costs of new hepatitis C drugs, optimizing insulin therapy in type 2 diabetes patients, and the evolution of psoriasis treatments and biologics.

This year’s keynote speaker is famed graffiti artist and business speaker Erik Wahl, whose popular Art of Vision presentation has helped organizations from Microsoft, Honda and Disney to AT&T, Forbes and the federal government uncover new ways to be more creative and productive.

The Expo hall featured 176 exhibit booths along with a record number of Science and Innovation Theaters, in which industry presented its latest breakthrough products and services. In addition, the Expo hall was the site of the annual poster program, which attracted a record 371 abstracts this year — a 37 percent increase from last year’s annual meeting. The professional and student posters describe the latest research on new and innovative roles or services in the practice of managed care pharmacy.

The Annual Meeting & Expo also offered AMCP the chance to install its new board of directors and honor individuals at a gala awards dinner who have made a lasting contribution to the managed care pharmacy field.
