The goal of the Walgreens Specialty Pharmacy and Duquesne University Mylan School of Pharmacy PGY1 Community Pharmacy Practice Residency with a focus in Specialty Pharmacy is to provide pharmacy residents with opportunities to develop the fundamental skills necessary to excel in the specialty pharmacy environment. The residency program is based at Walgreens Specialty Pharmacy located in Carnegie, Pennsylvania. This premier specialty pharmacy location offers a variety of patient care services to support patents who are managing chronic life-threatening or rare conditions, including cancer, Crohn’s disease, growth hormone disorders, multiple sclerosis, psoriasis, and rheumatoid arthritis, among others. The clinical pharmacists at this site work closely with health care professionals, patient care coordinators, insurance advocates and patients to meet the needs of the patient’s medication therapy. In addition, residents will gain insights on the pharmacy practice management issues that can affect the delivery of care for patients taking specialty medications. The residency is offered in partnership with Duquesne University Mylan School of Pharmacy. This partnership allows the resident the opportunity to also gain experiences in health and wellness services and develop the academic skills necessary to serve as an educator and preceptor. As part of this residency program, the resident will actively participate in educating Walgreens Specialty Pharmacy staff and some instructing of University students.

Below are examples of the activities the resident will participate in during the course of the residency program: Patient Care Programs: Disease management programs in the areas such as multiple sclerosis, oncology, rheumatoid arthritis, and growth hormone deficiency Educate patients on appropriate medication use Work with patients and prescribers to resolve drug therapy problems Identify strategies to improve medication adherence and reduce medication costs Contribute to the development of novel disease management programs Research Project: Design and conduct a practice based research project, in its entirety, present the findings at the AMCP Annual Meeting and submit for publication in a refereed journal. Medication Information: Contribute to the Specialty Pharmacy Weekly newsletter Respond to patient and healthcare professional medication information inquiries Specialty Pharmacy Presentations: Present Walgreens Specialty Pharmacy continuing education seminars Provide tailored information to healthcare providers and clients on specialty pharmacy topics Teaching: Provide clinical instruction to pharmacy staff and student pharmacists at the University Assist with content development and presentation of certification programs Enhance academic skills through completion of preparatory courses, including Teaching Methodology, Research Methods and Qualitative Methods.
