AMCP Applauds FDA Funding Hike

The omnibus appropriations agreement's $91 million in additional funding and $85 million in restored user fees will provide FDA much-needed resources to carry out its growing responsibilities, especially in the specialty pharmacy area.

For Immediate Release

Alexandria, Va., January 15, 2014 — The Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy today released the following statement by CEO Edith A. Rosato, RPh, IOM in response to the bipartisan omnibus appropriations agreement increasing FDA funding by $91 million and restoring $85 million in sequestered user fees:

"The Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy applauds the bipartisan omnibus appropriations agreement reached earlier this week. The bill's $91 million in additional FDA funding and $85 million in restored user fees will provide the agency much-needed resources to carry out its growing responsibilities."

"In the pharmaceuticals area alone, the FDA has seen an explosion in the number and complexity of the products it regulates. The growth in specialty medicines, especially in cancer treatments, and the rise of biosimilars by themselves will test FDA's ability to keep up with the science, as well as marketplace demands for lower cost therapies."

"As FDA's responsibilities stretch far into other areas, this additional funding is but a down-payment on the resources the FDA truly needs to meet its expanding portfolio of public health responsibilities. AMCP will continue to support full funding for the FDA."

The omnibus bill is expected to be taken up by the full House today, according to the House Appropriations Committee said. Including user fee revenue, FDA's total funding will be $4.4 billion.
