California Grants Pharmacists Provider Status

New Law Will Improve Access to Health Care, Reduce Costs

Alexandria, Va. October 2, 2013 — California Gov. Edmund G. Brown, Jr., signed into law Senate Bill 493, authorizing pharmacists to perform additional health care services. The new law also recognizes pharmacists with specialized training as “advance practice pharmacists.”

The legislative success follows AMCP advocacy efforts in the state. On Sept. 24, 2013, AMCP wrote the governor, urging him to sign the bill. A state-wide alert called on AMCP's over 1,000 California-based members to contact the governor's office.

AMCP CEO Edith A. Rosato, RPh, IOM, issued the following statement:

"We commend Gov. Brown for signing this groundbreaking and responsible legislation. At a time when millions of new patients will be entering an already overburdened health care system, using highly trained pharmacists to deliver more primary care is the right thing to do."

"Whenever pharmacists are allowed to provide additional health care services, patients win. Outcomes are better and they’re more satisfied with their care. The system overall benefits too – through lower costs, fewer drug related adverse events, and better access to care."

The pharmacist-provided services addressed in the new law include preventative care, wellness screenings, chronic disease management, immunization delivery, and medication therapy management, among others. These services have been recognized as beneficial to increasing the overall quality of patient care and increasing patient access.
