AMCP Endorses Medicare MTM Report’s Key Finding

AMCP Issues Response to Report by Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS)

For Immediate Release

Alexandria, Va., September 24, 2013 — The Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy issued the statement below in response to today’s release of “Medication Therapy Management in Chronically Ill Populations: Final Report,” by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). Report authors Acumen, LLC. found, among other things, that “medication therapy management programs consistently and substantially improved medication adherence and quality of prescribing for important medications treating congestive heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and diabetes … with the strongest impact in patients receiving comprehensive medication reviews.”
AMCP CEO Edith A. Rosato, RPh, IOM, stated:
"The Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy is very pleased with the CMS study’s finding that medication therapy management – enhanced with pharmacist and prescriber communications – can improve quality, adherence, and prescribing practices. With the explosion in chronic diseases and specialty pharmacy, evidence-based managed care tools such as MTM will play an increasingly important role in improving patient care and making health care affordable."
"We also agree that continued research is needed on the benefits of MTM among Medicare beneficiaries. AMCP looks forward to partnering with CMS and others in the public and private sectors in demonstrating the benefits of MTM – especially where health plans are given the flexibility to design programs according to their patient population served."
"MTM design is of paramount importance to improving outcomes and controlling costs. In this study, 25% of Part D parent organizations maintained or lowered Part D drug costs, while improving adherence to evidence-based medications. This study underscores AMCP’s position that the additional government mandates in S. 557 and H.R. 1024 would inhibit continued efforts to identify and implement best practices in MTM."
